Fashion in Your 50s: Embrace Your Style with Confidence

Fashion for women in their 50s is as diverse and dynamic as the women themselves. There's no one-size-fits-all approach because attitudes, influences, and body shapes continually evolve. Whether you're 51 or 59, your style can reflect your individuality and life experiences. Here's how to navigate fashion in your 50s with confidence.

1. Embrace the Change: Fashion for the Fabulous 50s

Turning 50 might feel daunting, but it's just a number. The stylish, vibrant woman you were at 49 is still here, ready to embrace fantastic fashion opportunities. Today’s brands offer sophisticated, fun, and fashionable clothing for women over 50. Don't limit yourself to age-specific lines; many items from younger brands can complement your style beautifully.

2. Invest in “Me Time”

With children grown or careers settled, it’s the perfect moment for self-care and style refreshment. Allocate time for your wardrobe updates—rushing won't yield great results. When shopping, take your time to explore options, read product details, and choose colors that make you shine. Online or in-store, research brands known for quality and style. Experimentation is key; if a trend piques your interest, try it on and seek expert advice on how to wear it age-appropriately.

Tip: If a new style doesn't make you feel fabulous, don't buy it. It’ll only gather dust in your wardrobe.

3. Stick to Your Style, Adapt to Your Shape

If you know your style and it works for you, stick with it! Body changes might mean some old favorites don't fit the same, but don’t feel pressured to overhaul your wardrobe. Look for brands that offer similar styles with more accommodating cuts. Sometimes, a bit of research or a fitting room session is all you need to find a flattering fit.

4. Ready for a Makeover? Explore with Enthusiasm!

Fashion is exciting because it evolves. Trying new trends can be thrilling and empowering. At LamiSaru Boutique, we love helping customers explore fresh styles and colors. Remember, not every trend will suit everyone, and that’s okay! Give yourself the time to try new pieces and see what resonates with you.

Important: Invest in a good bra. The right undergarments can transform how you look and feel in your clothes.

5. Tackling the Tricky Areas: Stylish Solutions

Flabby arms: Embrace them! Most women have concerns about their arms, but there are plenty of stylish ways to feel confident:

Floaty Sleeves: Non-clinging, soft sleeves can flatter without feeling restrictive.

3/4 Sleeves: These create an elongating effect, giving a slimmer appearance.

Cardigans & Shrugs: Light layers can be perfect over sleeveless tops or dresses. Just ensure they complement your outfit rather than appear as an afterthought.

6. Grandma Chic: Fashion Forward, Not Backward

Becoming a grandmother doesn’t mean outdated fashion. Today’s grandmothers are more vibrant and stylish than ever. Continue to embrace your personal style. Avoid group shopping trips that might dilute your choices. Instead, shop with a trusted friend or a helpful boutique like LamiSaru, where staff are dedicated to helping you find what's right for you.

It’s Time For A Closet Clean Out!

It's liberating to do a personal closet clean out. But not only liberating, it can solve the "I have a wardrobe of clothes and nothing to wear' problem. I recommend you tackle the task at least twice a year at the end of each season. Why at the end of each season? Because you are still in the dressing mode of the season you are heading out of, so you can more definitively decide what :

* To Keep
* To Maybe Keep or
* To Recycle

However, a wardrobe clean-out can be done anytime. If you find yourself thinking, "I don't have anything to wear," regardless of the season, following this system will help you rediscover your existing clothes and identify what new items you need to enhance your wardrobe—and lift your spirits.

The 80/20 Rule of Your Wardrobe

You've likely heard of the 80/20 rule. It applies to your wardrobe too: most of us wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. An organized wardrobe is not a luxury—it saves time, money, and often, sanity. Clutter can create confusion and overwhelm, clouding your daily decisions about what to wear and making the process longer than necessary. An organized wardrobe gives you the confidence to step out feeling great in clothes that suit your style.

How to Clean Out Your Wardrobe

Step 1: Pull Out Seasonal Pieces

Start by pulling out all the pieces from the current season. Yes, all of them. You might even find a forgotten treasure!

Step 2: Be Ruthless and Honest

Clear out anything damaged, ill-fitting, or that doesn’t make you feel great. Even beloved items that no longer suit your lifestyle or body shape must go. If you haven’t worn it this season, why would you next?

Step 3: Create Three Piles - Keep, Maybe, Recycle

Keep Pile

Items that make you feel fabulous, fit correctly, are in good condition, and have been worn recently.

Maybe Pile

Items you need until you can replace them or those you can’t part with yet. Sentimental pieces or items you're striving to fit back into should be stored away.

Recycle Pile

Anything damaged or in poor condition should go straight into a garbage bag. Items in good condition but no longer suited to your lifestyle or body shape, or that don’t match anything else in your wardrobe, should be donated to charity or sold. Be bold and decisive!

What to Do with Giveaways

There’s a woman out there who would love to wear the clothes you no longer need. I donate mine to the Riverland Women’s Shelter, and they are always appreciative. Donate yours to your favorite charity—there’s at least one in every town.

Once you’ve given them away, you’ll:

a. Experience the positive feeling of helping someone else. b. Forget all about those pieces.

An overflowing wardrobe full of unworn items is a waste on many levels:

Waste of space

Waste of clothing not being worn

Waste of a new potential outfit undiscovered

Embrace the process of cleaning out your wardrobe and enjoy the benefits of a clutter-free, organized, and stylish closet. Happy decluttering!

Time to Play: Styling Your Keep Pile

Now that you have sorted your wardrobe, it’s time to focus on your Keep pile. Try on these pieces, but this time pair them with items you haven't thought to coordinate with before. Treat this as your personal "play time"! In the privacy of your room, with only the mirror as your audience, you can experiment freely and discover new combinations. You might be surprised at the fresh outfits you can create.

Capture Your New Looks

Here’s a handy tip: when you create a new outfit that you love, take a photo. This way, you have a visual record of your newly styled outfit and won’t have to rely on memory the next time you’re getting dressed.

Identifying Gaps in Your Wardrobe

During this process, you’ll likely identify some gaps in your wardrobe. Perhaps you need a dressy casual top that can be paired with pants, skirts, and jackets. Or maybe a basic layering piece in a coordinating color to wear under jumpers and jackets. Consider adding versatile items like a blazer, great jeans, a scarf, jewelry, casual pants, or a basic colored knit to extend your current range.

So, right now......

Have a serious look at your wardrobe and decide if it is saying ‘help me’ and if that answer is YES then allocate at least 2 hours to your wardrobe blitz. You'll be happy you did!

Happy Wardrobe Blitzing!

Bron

Don’t let anyone tell you that you will be in a fashion desert when you hit 60. Our specially selected brands ooze style, sophistication, fun and effortless dressing. The current fashion trends may not be for you (you've seen it before!) but there is plenty of on target styles right here.

The sixty’s era is about being comfortable with who you are. From a fashion perspective this equates to absolutely knowing you do not have to dress for anyone but yourself.

Classic style with a hint of fashion is usually what the 60 something woman is looking for. You are passed worrying about ‘mutton dressing like lamb’ because you can spot the lamb fashion a mile away. You appreciate it for what it is and who it is for and are often heard reminiscing ‘ I remember wearing something like this” and its either said with warmth from memories of feeling great in the fashion or with amazement that you would really wear such a thing!

One thing that does tend to happen in your 60’s is the colours you used to be able to wear may not look quite as good anymore and colours you have been avoiding can give you a new lift. This is because our skin and hair colour changes as we mature. If you haven’t tried a new colour recently, give it a go. Try one that you love because that is usually the one that will give your skin a beautiful radiance. Look at the reds, purples and bold blue hues for a colour spark.

Wardrobe building should be based on classic, stylish and elegant pieces that can be given a fashion edge with jewellery, hoisery and shoes.

There are possibly areas of your body that you wonder when and how they arrived!

1. Whose upper arm is that?

There are many brands on the market that understand the need for a sleeve. However, having said that there are still not enough brands who design a stylish dress with a sleeve.
Choose a soft floaty sleeve that does not cling and flatters the arm. And it doesn’t have to be very long. ¾ sleeves create a sense of length and elongate the arm which provides a slimmer appearance. But make sure the sleeve is not too tight or in a revealing fabric.
A mesh sleeve cardi or shrug is a fabulous wardrobe basic to throw over a sleeveless top or dress. Ensure you wear the right shape for the dress or top otherwise it will just look like an added extra rather than part of the outfit.

2. Oops, another bump.

Disguise is the name of the game. Choose classic cut jackets and tops in a fabric with structure. Watch out for the jersey garments – ensure the style drapes from the shoulder or bust and doesn’t cling across the bra line. Invest in a classic cut jean (philosophy, Gabrielle Fratini, Tooralie Wool Denim or Yarra Trail) that have a high rise that will not create the dreaded love handles. Vests in a beautiful draping fabric can be your disguise friend.

3. Beautiful, bountiful bosoms.

The first step is to invest in a quality, supportive bra that is the correct fit. Then choose V neck or low scoop neck tops. The ‘disguise friend draping vest’ will soften the look of a large breast. If you want to cover your neck and collarbone area, opt for shirts that still provide a V at the neckline or add a short scarf tied at the chest over a higher neck knit top.

Many women retain gorgeous shaped legs right into their latter years. So these should definitely be shown off. Wear a dress just above or on the knee with an opague hose (50 – 80 den Bellissima) which will provide good coverage but are still sheer enough to highlight the shape of the leg.

Comfortable shoes are definitely in demand from our 60 something customers. There are some lovely flats in gorgeous colours available now that will give a zing to your outfit. We stock styles that are stylish and not too high.

A couple of little ‘LamiSaru tips’

1. Give yourself time to shop.

We see so many women rushing into the store wanting to find an outfit in a nanosecond! That just doesn’t work. It really wont jump out at you! To really create a great new wardrobe or even just to find the basic wardrobe builders or refresh your style, you need to give yourself time. This also applies to looking online. Take time to read about the product, find the colours that you like and do research to find the brands that are consistently reliable with their quality and styling.

2. Never go seriously fashion shopping with a group of friends.

The dynamics of a big group just doesn’t work. If you need a second opinion take just one friend or close female relative – someone you really trust and who has your best interests at heart. And, find a boutique where the staff are genuinely interested in helping you find what is right for you. LamiSaru is the one that comes to mind!

LamiSaru ladies would love to spend some time with you, highlighting the styles and brands that we know work for the 60 something woman. For our online customers email us on contact@lamisaru.com or phone us on 1300 913 097 and we will happily talk you through your purchases. Our mantra of “Helping women feel good about themselves through fashion” ensures we offer stylist advice that is honest and age appropriate.

And as Coco Chanel beautifully stated:

"You can be gorgeous at 20, charming at 40 and irresistible for the rest of your life."

The brands we recommend for you:

Andiamo

Toorallie

Frank Lyman

JUMP

Philosophy

Yarra Trail

Layerd

The 40’s offers a decade where women are less inclined to change their style once they have found it. When you are 49 you will possibly wear a very similar style to when you were 41.

Leaping out of the 30’s you may have found you are bursting with fashion energy, ready to see what is on offer. You know who you are, so are confident with trying the next new thing. However, there is still a need to be cautious and realize that ‘the next new fashion trend’ may not necessarily be your thing. But I encourage you to try it! See if it works for you and if it makes you feel great! If it does, go for it. If not, leave it for the next fashionista.

There may be various influences on your fashion decisions – you may have teenage daughters who have decided they want to influence your fashion decisions (tread wisely). You are perhaps not so busy with babies but busy being the taxi. Perhaps your career is in full bloom or you may be looking to shift to a new position.

Whatever your position, the 40’s are a great time for fashion. There are so many choices for you. You may still feel and look good in your style from your late 30’s plus there are new brands to discover that will provide sophistication without sacrificing style.

Your wardrobe will be quite diverse – from the basic jeans and tee for taxiing the kids or relaxing on the weekend, to the little black dress for the more formal occasions.

During your 40’s you may find that colours you could never wear are now looking great. It is a slow transition which blossoms in full in your late 50’s (yes I know – ages away!) So again, try a new colour you have been avoiding – one you love- and see if it now works for you.

The one thing you must do is give yourself time to shop. You won’t be able to fully appreciate the gorgeous gear that is just right for you unless you allocate time to seriously peruse. And when you need to build your wardrobe for the new season, refresh your style or add that extra little number that extends the life of what you already have, its imperative you give yourself time. Allow us the pleasure of working with you to find just the right gorgeous gear for you.

Yours in Fashion
Bronwyn

Brands we recommend for you:
